Receive Tanzanian (+255) SMS OTPs in your dashboard or pipeline

Calling code +255OTP Gateway from $0.20 per codeDedicated numbers: US & Canada onlyAPI id: tz
Quick answer

OTP Route gives teams one-time Tanzanian (+255) numbers through its OTP Gateway, so you can receive a verification code for a chosen service in the dashboard or deliver it to your code via the API and signed webhooks. Codes start from $0.20 per code, the activation window is 20 minutes, and you are refunded automatically if nothing arrives.

Why do teams launching in East Africa test with +255 numbers?

Tanzania is one of East Africa's largest mobile markets, and phones are the main way many people reach online services, from messaging to mobile money. Swahili and English are both used officially, with Swahili dominating everyday conversation, so a product entering the market usually ships a Swahili interface alongside English.

Typical reasons to order a +255 number for testing:

  • Checking that a Swahili onboarding screen, error messages and the SMS prompt read naturally together.
  • Running a pre-launch pass from Dar es Salaam's perspective before a marketing push.
  • Verifying a company's own business accounts for a regional support desk without exposing employees' personal SIMs.

Our mobile app verification notes describe how teams structure these checks.

Which services are routed for Tanzania right now?

Tanzania currently has more than 1,600 services available on the OTP Gateway. Frequently used routes include WhatsApp, Telegram, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, X (Twitter), Google (Gmail & YouTube), Microsoft & Outlook, LinkedIn, imo, Uber and ChatGPT (OpenAI).

OTP routing is decided per service and per country, and the pool moves throughout the day, so ask the API rather than trusting a cached list.

How do I pull a Tanzanian code through the API?

Point your client at https://otproute.com/api/v1 and send a Bearer key with the or_live_ prefix, generated in the Developer console. Tanzania's country id is tz.

  • Discover: GET /api/v1/countries and GET /api/v1/services give you the ids; cache them.
  • Price: GET /api/v1/prices?country=tz&service=<id> returns the live price for that pairing.
  • Order: POST /api/v1/activations with {"service": "telegram", "country": "tz"} returns an activation id and a +255 number.
  • Receive: listen for the activation.sms_received webhook or poll GET /api/v1/activations/{id}.
  • Clean up: POST /api/v1/activations/{id}/cancel when a run is abandoned.

For parallel CI jobs, webhooks are kinder to the 300 requests per minute limit than aggressive polling. Make the handler idempotent on the activation id and verify the X-OTPRoute-Signature HMAC before trusting the body; the webhook capture article walks through it. This Tanzania OTP API flow is the same SMS verification API used for every other country.

And without writing code?

Open the dashboard, go to the OTP Gateway, select Tanzania and your service, and confirm the displayed price. Copy the +255 number into the app you are testing; the code appears beside the order as soon as the SMS is received, while a timer shows how much of the 20 minutes is left. Operations staff who verify one company account a month usually stay on this path, because it needs nothing more than a browser and a funded wallet, with no API key to create or rotate.

How are Tanzanian phone numbers written?

Inside Tanzania, mobile numbers are dialled with a trunk 0, so locally they look like 07… or 06… followed by eight more digits. In international format the zero drops away and you get +255 plus nine digits, for example a number beginning +2557.

Store the E.164 version and normalise whatever users type: remove spaces, convert a leading 0 to +255, and treat 00255 as +255. Mixed formats in one table cause duplicate accounts and failed lookups. Expect verification texts in English from most international platforms, and Swahili from some local senders or when the account language is set to it.

The +255 code didn't arrive. Now what?

You are not charged for silence. If the 20-minute window closes without an SMS, or you cancel, the full amount returns to your wallet. Before retrying, consider the usual causes: the service may refuse virtual numbers, its delivery to Tanzania may be slow at that moment, or the specific number may be unsuitable for that platform. Wait out the window, retry later or via another service route, and resist rapid re-ordering. The failed delivery guide has a longer checklist.

Long-term numbers, wallet and sandbox

A self-serve long-term Tanzanian number does not exist on OTP Route. Dedicated Numbers are limited to the United States and Canada, from $1.95/month; for a lasting +255 line, email [email protected], and availability depends on local rules.

You fund everything from one prepaid USD wallet, with no plans and no monthly fee. Card and USDT/USDC top-ups are accepted, each with an emailed PDF invoice. A development account can be moved to sandbox on request so simulated numbers and codes exercise your integration first.

Frequently asked questions

Can I verify a Tanzanian account from outside Tanzania?

Yes. The +255 number is provisioned online and the code is shown in your dashboard or delivered to your server, wherever your team sits.

What country code does the API expect for Tanzania?

Use tz as the country id in price queries and in POST /api/v1/activations.

How much does it cost to receive a Tanzania SMS OTP?

From $0.20 per code. The exact price depends on the service and is returned live by GET /api/v1/prices.

Should the leading zero be kept in stored numbers?

No. Store +255 plus the nine-digit national number and convert any 0-prefixed input on the way in.

Can I test a Swahili sign-up flow?

Yes. Set your app or test device to Swahili, register with a +255 number from the OTP Gateway, and read the code your app triggers.

Is my money returned if a code never comes?

Yes. An activation that expires after 20 minutes or is cancelled is refunded in full to your wallet.

Are all Tanzanian services compatible with these numbers?

Not all. Some platforms reject virtual numbers, and you must respect each service's terms and the OTP Route Acceptable Use Policy.

Can I get a monthly Tanzanian line for a support team?

Not self-serve. Monthly Dedicated Numbers are available only in the US and Canada; email the team to ask about Tanzania.

Service names are trademarks of their respective owners. OTP Route is not affiliated with them. Use numbers lawfully, follow each service's terms and our Acceptable Use Policy.
