A pre-flight checklist for receiving Telegram login codes on a test number
To receive a Telegram verification code with OTP Route, create an OTP Gateway activation for the telegram service in the country your test needs, enter the number in Telegram, and collect the SMS code in the dashboard, by polling the API or on a signed webhook. Prices start at $0.20 per code, and if no SMS arrives within 20 minutes the full amount is refunded to your wallet.
What should be ready before ordering a Telegram number?
Run through this list first; most failed Telegram tests trace back to one of these items.
- A clear purpose. You are testing a bot, a Mini App, a login widget or a support workflow that your own team operates, and you need a fresh Telegram account that no employee's personal phone is tied to.
- A target country. Decide which market the account should appear to belong to. Language defaults and some onboarding screens follow the number's country.
- Wallet funds or sandbox. A funded prepaid wallet, or a development account switched to sandbox by support for dry runs.
- An API key, if automating. Create one with the
or_live_prefix in the Developer console. - A clean device or emulator. Telegram delivers codes inside the app to any session already logged in, so a device with no existing session makes the SMS path predictable.
- Time. Each activation is open for 20 minutes; don't start one until the tester is ready to type the number.
When does Telegram actually send an SMS code?
Telegram identifies every account by phone number. It asks for a code when someone registers a new account and when an existing account signs in on a new device. If that account is already active somewhere else, Telegram usually sends the login code as a message in the existing session rather than by SMS, which is why a brand-new number on a fresh device is the cleanest way to get the SMS step under test. It may also offer a call or a resend after a short wait.
Two-step verification on Telegram is a separate cloud password set inside the app. It is not an SMS factor, so store that password in your team's secret manager if you enable it on a test account.
Which countries can I pick for Telegram, and why does it matter?
The telegram service is currently listed in 199 countries, including India, Germany, Brazil, Nigeria, Indonesia, the United Kingdom, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkey, Spain, Mexico, the Philippines, Vietnam and Egypt.
Match the country to the test case. A bot that replies in Portuguese should be tried from a Brazilian account; a support team covering Central Asia may want a Kazakh number. Telegram can also treat numbers from some countries more cautiously than others, so if one route keeps failing, a neighbouring market is a reasonable fallback. Live availability changes through the day, so read it from the API rather than from a saved list.
How do I automate the Telegram code with the API?
- Optionally confirm the cost with
GET /api/v1/prices?country=<id>&service=telegram. - Create the order:
POST /api/v1/activationswith{"service": "telegram", "country": "<id>"}, where the country id comes fromGET /api/v1/countries(for examplebrorde). - Hand the returned number to your test runner, which types it into the Telegram client or emulator.
- Wait for the code. On a webhook, listen for
activation.sms_received; otherwise pollGET /api/v1/activations/{id}at a sensible interval. - Clean up with
POST /api/v1/activations/{id}/cancelif the run aborts.
For webhooks, verify X-OTPRoute-Signature by recomputing HMAC-SHA256 over <t>.<raw body> with the endpoint secret, reject old timestamps, and record each activation id you have processed so a redelivered event is ignored. Up to 5 webhook endpoints and 300 requests per minute are available per account. The CI pipeline guide covers parallel runs.
Can I do the same steps by hand in the dashboard?
Yes. Sign in, open the OTP Gateway, choose Telegram and the country, check the price, and order. Copy the number into Telegram's phone screen, select the matching country code, and request the code. When the SMS lands it shows next to the order, ready to paste.
The Telegram code didn't arrive. What's on the troubleshooting list?
- Is there an existing session? If the number was used before, Telegram may have sent the code in-app instead. A fresh activation avoids this.
- Did the window finish? Let the 20-minute timer run. You only pay if the code arrives; expiry or cancellation refunds the full amount automatically.
- Is the route accepted? Telegram may refuse some virtual numbers. That is outside our control and is exactly why the refund rule exists.
- Retry with spacing. Order again later or in another country; do not re-order in a tight loop, which helps neither delivery nor your rate limit.
- Check the country code on the device. A mismatch between the selected country and the number is an easy mistake in manual tests.
When is a Dedicated Number a better fit for Telegram?
A one-time OTP Gateway number suits registration tests. If the Telegram account must sign in again next month, for example a team account that runs a support channel or a bot's admin login, it needs a phone number your team still controls. Dedicated Numbers in the United States and Canada, from $1.95/month, stay yours while they renew and forward inbound SMS to the dashboard and to your webhook as number.sms_received. The comparison of temporary vs dedicated numbers explains the trade-off.
What does responsible Telegram testing look like?
Follow Telegram's terms of service. Create one account per real person or business purpose, use it for your own products, bots and operations, and never for spam, mass account creation or getting around a ban. Every Telegram order you place is also covered by the OTP Route Acceptable Use Policy. Telegram is a trademark of its owner, and OTP Route is not affiliated with it.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a Telegram verification code without using my personal phone?
Yes. Order a Telegram number from the OTP Route OTP Gateway, enter it in the app, and read the SMS code in the dashboard or through the API.
What is the service id for Telegram in the API?
It is telegram. Combine it with a country id from GET /api/v1/countries when creating an activation.
How much does a Telegram SMS verification for testing cost?
From $0.20 per code; the precise price depends on the country and is returned live by the prices endpoint.
Why did Telegram send the code inside the app instead of by SMS?
Telegram delivers login codes to an existing session when one is available. Use a fresh number and a device without a logged-in session to test the SMS path.
Can I reuse a one-time number to log back into Telegram later?
No, OTP Gateway numbers are for a single code. For repeat logins, use a Dedicated Number in the US or Canada.
Am I charged if Telegram rejects the number?
No. If no code reaches the number within 20 minutes, or you cancel, the full amount returns to your wallet.
