Testing Israeli (+972) phone verification with OTP routing
Yes, OTP Route lets you receive Israeli (+972) SMS verification codes on a one-time OTP Gateway number, either in the dashboard or through the REST API and signed webhooks. Prices start from $0.20 per code and vary by service, and nothing is charged unless the code reaches you within the 20-minute activation window.
How are +972 numbers written, and how should you store them?
Israel uses the country code +972 and a trunk prefix of 0. Locals write a mobile number as 05X-XXX-XXXX, where the zero is only for domestic dialling. In international form that zero disappears, so 054-123-4567 becomes +972541234567.
Most bugs in Israeli sign-up flows come from that one character:
- Users paste the national form with the leading
0into a field that already prepends+972, producing an invalid+9720…string. Strip the trunk zero before you join the parts. - Some people type
00972, the international access form. Normalise it to+972as well. - Mobile numbers have nine digits after the country code, starting with
5. Validate against a maintained numbering library rather than a fixed length rule.
Keep one canonical E.164 value per user and format for display only at render time.
Which language do Israeli verification texts arrive in?
Hebrew is the main language of Israeli SMS, and Arabic is widely used as well; many global services also send English templates depending on the account locale. Hebrew and Arabic are written right to left and travel as Unicode, which means fewer characters per segment and, inside the message, a mix of RTL words and left-to-right digits.
For automated tests, never pull the code by character position. Extract the first run of four to eight digits with a regular expression and ignore any invisible direction marks. If your own product also sends Hebrew messages, check that the code still reads correctly on a phone, since bidirectional text can visually reorder punctuation around the number.
Why do product teams run test cases against Israel?
Israel has a large technology sector, so plenty of products launch there early or are built by teams with a local office. A right-to-left interface is also one of the best stress tests for localisation: layout mirroring, mixed-direction input fields and phone fields that must stay left to right even inside a Hebrew form. Running the real verification step on a +972 number shows whether all of that holds together, which a mocked SMS cannot. Our mobile app verification page covers how teams wire this into release checks.
Which services can send codes to an Israeli number?
The Israeli route currently carries more than 1,900 services. Popular options in the live snapshot include WhatsApp, Telegram, Google (Gmail & YouTube), Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Microsoft & Outlook, Amazon, Viber, Signal, LinkedIn, Uber and Claude.
Because inventory changes through the day, treat the catalogue as data: read GET /api/v1/services and the price endpoint before each run instead of trusting a list saved in your repo.
What does the Israel OTP API call sequence look like?
Authenticate against https://otproute.com/api/v1 with a Bearer key (prefix or_live_) created in the Developer console. The country id for Israel is il.
Start with GET /api/v1/balance so an empty wallet fails the suite immediately. Then ask GET /api/v1/prices?country=il&service=<id> for the current price and availability, and place the order with POST /api/v1/activations using a body like {"service": "telegram", "country": "il"}. The response holds the activation id and the +972 number your test enters into the app.
Delivery comes either as an activation.sms_received webhook or through polling GET /api/v1/activations/{id}; the account limit of 300 requests per minute leaves room for both. Verify every webhook's X-OTPRoute-Signature header by computing HMAC-SHA256 over <t>.<raw body> with your endpoint secret, reject old timestamps, and make the handler idempotent on the activation id. If a test aborts, call POST /api/v1/activations/{id}/cancel. The integration guide and API docs have the details.
Prefer clicking to coding? In the dashboard, open the OTP Gateway, choose Israel and the service, confirm the displayed price, and wait for the code to appear next to your new number.
What should you do when a +972 code does not arrive?
Each order stays open for 20 minutes. If the window closes with no SMS, or you cancel it, the whole amount is credited back to the wallet automatically, so you only pay if the code arrives.
- Give the full window a chance; a slow send is not the same as a failed one.
- Retry later or move to another service route instead of firing new orders in a tight loop.
- Check whether the service accepts virtual numbers. Some do not, and the refund exists for that case.
Use these numbers to test or operate your own legitimate products and accounts, keep to every service's terms, and note that OTP Route's Acceptable Use Policy applies. More tips are in reducing failed deliveries.
Can I get a long-term Israeli number, and how is it paid for?
Not as a self-serve product. Dedicated lines that you keep and renew are offered only in the United States and Canada, from $1.95/month. For a lasting +972 line, email [email protected]; the team can look into it, but local rules decide and nothing is promised.
Payment is pay as you go from a single prepaid USD wallet: no monthly fee, no plan. Funding works through a card or the USDT/USDC stablecoins, and every top-up triggers an emailed PDF invoice. A development account can be switched to sandbox on request, returning simulated numbers and codes for end-to-end tests at no cost to the wallet. See pricing.
Frequently asked questions
Can I receive an Israel SMS OTP without an Israeli SIM card?
Yes. An OTP Gateway number with the +972 code receives the SMS for you, and the code appears in the dashboard or reaches your webhook.
Should I include the leading 0 when entering an Israeli number?
Only in the national format. In E.164 the trunk 0 is dropped, so the number becomes +9725 followed by eight digits for a mobile.
Will Hebrew text in the SMS break my OTP parser?
Not if you extract the digits with a regular expression instead of fixed positions and ignore invisible direction characters.
What is the country id for Israel in the API?
It is il, used in both the prices query and the activation request body.
How much does an Israel verification number cost?
From $0.20 per code; the exact price depends on the service and is returned live by GET /api/v1/prices.
Do I lose money if the code never arrives?
No. Without a code inside 20 minutes, or after a cancel, the full amount returns to your wallet.
Can I test a Hebrew-language sign-up screen end to end?
Yes. Order a +972 number for testing, run your localised flow, and capture the code through the API, which checks both the RTL interface and real SMS delivery.
