Testing Greek Phone Verification Without a Drawer Full of SIM Cards
You can receive Greece (+30) SMS verification codes with OTP Route by ordering a temporary number from the OTP Gateway and reading the code in the dashboard or through the API and webhooks. It costs from $0.20 per code, and an activation that gets no SMS within 20 minutes is refunded in full.
Your Greek rollout depends on a code you cannot see
A common situation: the app is translated into Greek, the payment provider is wired up, and the last blocker before launch is that nobody on the team holds a +30 SIM to walk through phone verification. Someone borrows a colleague's personal number, the code lands on their phone during a meeting, and the test run stalls.
OTP routing removes that dependency. Your test harness asks OTP Route for a Greek number tied to a specific service, enters it in the sign-up form, and receives the resulting code as data. Nobody's private phone is involved, and the same process works at 3 a.m. in a CI job. The QA testing page shows how teams organise this across several markets.
How does the Greece OTP API fit into a test run?
Authenticate against https://otproute.com/api/v1 with a Bearer key beginning or_live_, generated in the Developer console. Greece uses the country id gr.
- Look up the cost with
GET /api/v1/prices?country=gr&service=<id>. - Start an activation with
POST /api/v1/activationsand a body like{"service": "viber", "country": "gr"}. - Collect the code from
GET /api/v1/activations/{id}, or subscribe to theactivation.sms_receivedwebhook. - Abandon unneeded numbers with
POST /api/v1/activations/{id}/cancel.
Webhook deliveries carry X-OTPRoute-Signature: t=<unix>,v1=<hex>, an HMAC-SHA256 of "<t>.<raw body>" computed with the endpoint secret. Verify it, refuse stale timestamps, and key processing on the activation id so a retried event is harmless. Also handle activation.expired and activation.cancelled so your suite can move on cleanly. Limits per account are 10 API keys, 5 webhook endpoints and 300 requests per minute. The OTP API integration guide has a fuller walkthrough.
Which services can send codes to a +30 number?
Greece currently shows more than 1,800 services in the live catalog. Frequently requested ones include Viber, which is an everyday messenger for many Greeks, plus WhatsApp, Telegram and Signal. On the account side there is Google (Gmail & YouTube), Microsoft & Outlook and LinkedIn; for social and video, Facebook, Instagram and TikTok. Travel and commerce teams often test with Airbnb, Uber, Amazon and eBay.
Treat these names as a snapshot. Inventory shifts through the day, so check GET /api/v1/services or the dashboard before a large run.
What makes Greek numbers and messages different to handle?
Greece has no trunk prefix. National numbers are ten digits whether you dial locally or internationally, so E.164 is simply +30 followed by those ten digits. Mobile numbers begin with 69, while landlines start with 2 (Athens numbers begin with 21). That consistency makes normalization easy: remove spaces and a leading 0030 if a user typed the international access code, and store the +30 form.
The interesting part is the text. Verification messages may arrive in Greek script, in English, or occasionally in Greeklish, the informal habit of writing Greek with Latin letters. Greek-script SMS is sent with Unicode encoding, which fits fewer characters per message segment, so a long template can split in two. Your parser should pull out the digits regardless of alphabet and should not assume the code sits at the end.
Why test here? Greece is an EU market with GDPR obligations, a large tourism economy that brings in short-stay visitors and hosts, and a sizable diaspora that keeps +30 numbers while living abroad. Localization QA for Greek copy, sign-up flows for hospitality platforms and regional operations are all common reasons.
Can my operations team do this in the browser?
Yes, nothing about the gateway requires code.
- Register at signup using email plus a 6-digit code, or Google sign-in. Turn on TOTP two-factor for the account.
- Top up the wallet.
- In the OTP Gateway choose Greece and the service, review the price, and order.
- Paste the +30 number into the target app and wait; the code shows up on the activation.
Orders placed in the browser and through the API share one wallet, so mixed teams stay in sync.
Nothing arrived on the Greek number. Now what?
The 20-minute window protects you here: if no SMS turns up, or you cancel before it does, the full amount returns to the wallet without a support ticket. How fast a code arrives depends on the service and the route, so patience inside the window is usually the right first move.
If the window closes empty, ask the app to resend once on a fresh activation, try again later, or choose another route for the same service. Some services refuse virtual numbers outright, and no amount of retrying changes that. In automated suites, add a back-off rather than re-ordering in a loop. Always respect the terms of the service you are testing, and remember that OTP Route's Acceptable Use Policy applies to every activation.
Is a permanent Greek number possible, and how is billing set up?
Self-serve long-term numbers are not offered in Greece. Teams that need a persistent +30 line can email [email protected] to ask, with the understanding that local rules decide whether it is possible. Dedicated Virtual Numbers exist for the United States and Canada only, from $1.95/month, with inbound SMS forwarded to your webhook and browser calling.
Payment is pay as you go from a prepaid USD wallet, topped up by card or with USDT/USDC; there is no subscription or plan. Every top-up generates a PDF invoice by email. To wire up your Greek test suite without spending anything, request sandbox mode on a development account, which returns simulated numbers and codes.
Frequently asked questions
What country id does the API use for Greece?
Greece is gr. Use it with GET /api/v1/prices and in the body of POST /api/v1/activations.
Can I test my app's Greek sign-up flow without a local SIM?
Yes. Order a +30 number for testing from the OTP Gateway, enter it in your sign-up form, and read the code from the dashboard, a poll or your webhook.
Do Greek numbers need a leading zero?
No. Greece has no trunk prefix, so the international form is +30 plus the same ten digits people dial at home.
Will verification texts to a +30 number be in Greek?
Sometimes. Depending on the sender, codes arrive in Greek, in English or in Latin-letter Greek, so parse for digits rather than words.
What happens to my money if the code never comes?
If no SMS arrives within 20 minutes, or you cancel first, the full charge goes back to your wallet automatically.
Can I pay for a Greece SMS verification API setup with stablecoins?
Yes. The wallet accepts USDT and USDC as well as cards, and each top-up comes with a PDF invoice.
