Viber SMS Verification for Testing: One-Off Number or Long-Term Line?
A team can receive a Viber verification code with OTP Route by ordering an OTP Gateway number for the viber service in one of 197 countries and reading the code in the dashboard, through API polling or from a signed webhook. Prices start at $0.20 per code, and you pay only if the SMS arrives within the 20-minute window.
Should a Viber test use a one-time number or a line you keep?
Decide based on whether the account must outlive the test. Viber ties each account to a phone number, and reactivating on a new device later usually means receiving another code on that same number. If your test only needs to complete registration once (checking a localisation build, confirming that a regional sign-up flow works, or validating a QA script), an OTP Gateway number is enough. It serves one code and is released afterwards.
If the account must keep working, for example a staging profile that QA opens every sprint or a support identity your team shares, a number you keep is the better fit. That is the job of Dedicated Virtual Numbers: available instantly in the United States and Canada from $1.95/month, with inbound SMS in the dashboard and forwarding to the number.sms_received webhook. Viber testers in any other market will find no self-serve long-term option for their country. The temporary vs dedicated numbers guide compares the two in more detail.
What does Viber use a phone number for?
The phone number is the Viber account's identifier. During sign-up on a mobile device, the app asks for the number and sends an activation code to prove you control it. The same check returns when you reinstall the app or move to a new phone. Viber's desktop app links to the primary mobile account instead of registering on its own, so the mobile verification is the step that matters for most tests.
Viber does not rely on text messages for every activation; for some numbers it may verify with a call instead. OTP Gateway numbers capture codes sent by SMS, so when the app offers a choice, take the text message option.
Which countries can receive a Viber code?
The viber service is currently listed in 197 countries. Among them are Ukraine, Bulgaria, Serbia, Greece, the Philippines, Vietnam, Belarus, Moldova, Myanmar, Cyprus, Croatia, Israel, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States. The app has a strong following across Eastern Europe, the Balkans and parts of Southeast Asia, which is where many localisation and launch tests land.
Pick the country to match the test case, not whichever is open first. A profile meant for Filipino users should be registered with a Philippine number so that country defaults, language and contact discovery behave as they would for a real customer. The full list lives on the countries page, and availability changes during the day.
How do I request a Viber verification code through the API?
Send every request to https://otproute.com/api/v1 with your or_live_ key in a Bearer header, and work through these steps for Viber:
- Check the price for your chosen market with
GET /api/v1/prices?country=ua&service=viber. Hereuais Ukraine; look up other ids withGET /api/v1/countries. - Create the order:
POST /api/v1/activationswith{"service": "viber", "country": "ua"}. Store the activation id and the number it returns. - Enter the number in the Viber registration screen on your test device and request the code.
- Receive the code through the
activation.sms_receivedwebhook, or pollGET /api/v1/activations/{id}every few seconds if your runner can't accept inbound calls. - Cancel with
POST /api/v1/activations/{id}/cancelif the test path changes.
For webhooks, check X-OTPRoute-Signature (t=<unix>,v1=<hex>) by computing HMAC-SHA256 over the timestamp, a dot and the raw body with the endpoint secret, and refuse stale timestamps. Make the handler idempotent: record each activation id and skip events you've already processed. The account limit is 300 requests per minute.
Getting a Viber code from the dashboard
For QA testers working by hand, the dashboard does the same thing without code. Open the OTP Gateway, choose Viber and the country, read the price shown, and confirm. Type the number into Viber, ask for the code, and it appears on the order card once delivered. The 20-minute window starts at checkout; if it ends with nothing, or you cancel, the charge returns to your wallet.
Why might a Viber code not arrive?
- Viber refused the number. Like many messaging apps, Viber may decline virtual numbers. No code means no charge.
- A different verification method kicked in. If the app falls back to a call, there is no SMS to capture; cancel and try again with the text option.
- The route is congested. Retry later or choose another route for the same service rather than re-ordering in a tight loop.
- The window hasn't closed. Let the activation run before giving up.
Reducing failed OTP deliveries goes further into retry strategy.
Responsible use, billing and sandbox
Viber's terms apply to every account you register. Use OTP Route only to test and operate your own legitimate products and business profiles: one account per real person or business, no mass or fake registrations, and nothing that breaks a ban. OTP Route's Acceptable Use Policy covers the rest. Viber is a trademark of its owner, and OTP Route is not affiliated with it.
Payment comes from a prepaid USD wallet with no monthly fee; top up by card or USDT/USDC and get a PDF invoice per top-up. A development account can be moved to sandbox on request, so your Viber SMS verification for testing runs on simulated numbers and codes before you spend real funds.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a virtual number for Viber to test my app's onboarding?
Yes. Order an OTP Gateway number for the viber service in your target country and read the activation code by API or in the dashboard. Viber may still reject some virtual numbers, in which case the order is refunded.
Which Viber phone number should I use for a test account I need again next month?
Use a number you keep. Dedicated Virtual Numbers are available instantly in the United States and Canada, while one-off OTP Gateway numbers are released after a single code.
What is the service id for Viber in the API?
It is viber, used together with a country id, for example GET /api/v1/prices?country=ph&service=viber for the Philippines.
How many countries can receive a Viber code on OTP Route?
The service is listed in 197 countries, but live availability changes during the day, so check the API or dashboard before ordering.
Do I pay if Viber never sends the SMS?
No. When the 20-minute window ends without a code, or you cancel, the full amount goes back to your wallet automatically.
Should I use webhooks or polling to receive Viber OTPs?
Webhooks are the better default because your system reacts as soon as the code lands; verify the signature and deduplicate on the activation id. Polling GET /api/v1/activations/{id} is a sound fallback for runners behind a firewall.
Can I register many Viber accounts with OTP Route?
Only accounts for real people or businesses you represent, within Viber's terms and our Acceptable Use Policy. Mass registration is not permitted.
Service names are trademarks of their respective owners. OTP Route is not affiliated with them. Use numbers lawfully, follow each service's terms and our Acceptable Use Policy.
