Rwandan (+250) verification codes for QA, launch and operations teams
With OTP Route you can receive Rwanda (+250) verification codes by ordering a one-time number from the OTP Gateway and reading the code in the dashboard, by polling the REST API or through a signed webhook. Pricing starts from $0.20 per code, the exact amount per service is returned live by the API, and you pay only when a code arrives within the 20-minute window.
Who needs a Rwanda verification number?
Kigali has become a base for regional startups, fintech pilots and East African operations teams, and products launching there need their phone verification step tested on real Rwandan routes. Typical cases: a payments or onboarding flow being localized for Rwanda (see fintech onboarding), a support team that runs business accounts for a regional office, or QA engineers who want the +250 path covered in CI next to Kenya or Uganda.
What does a +250 number look like in E.164?
Rwanda's country code is +250 and the trunk prefix is 0. Mobile numbers are written domestically as 07X XXX XXXX, so the stored form is +2507XXXXXXXX: drop the leading 0, keep the nine digits that follow. Test that your form accepts the local 07... style as well as +250 and 00250, and that it never stores +2500....
Kinyarwanda, English, French and Swahili are all official languages. Most international services send verification text in English, and some follow the account language, so check that any screen echoing the message handles the locale you ship.
What should be ready before the first +250 order?
A short preparation pass saves wasted orders later:
- an OTP Route account with TOTP two-factor switched on and a small wallet balance;
- one Bearer key per environment, so CI and laptops never share a credential;
- the country id
rwand your service id stored in configuration rather than hard-coded; - a webhook endpoint with its secret kept in a secrets manager, or a polling helper with a sensible interval;
- a test account in your own product that is allowed to change its phone number.
A balance check with GET /api/v1/balance at the start of each suite lets a run fail fast instead of halfway through.
Which services can receive Rwanda SMS OTP codes?
More than 900 services are listed for rw today. Popular routes in the current snapshot include WhatsApp, Telegram, Facebook, Instagram, X (Twitter), TikTok, Google (Gmail & YouTube), LinkedIn, imo, Uber, ChatGPT (OpenAI) and Claude. OTP routing inventory changes through the day, so read availability from the API right before you order.
How does the Rwanda OTP API flow run?
Authenticate to https://otproute.com/api/v1 with an or_live_ Bearer key from the Developer console.
GET /api/v1/prices?country=rw&service=whatsappreturns the live price and whether the route can take an order.POST /api/v1/activationswith{"service": "whatsapp", "country": "rw"}returns an activation id and a +250 number.- Enter the number in your own app and request the code.
- Collect it from the
activation.sms_receivedwebhook or by pollingGET /api/v1/activations/{id}. - Abort with
POST /api/v1/activations/{id}/cancelif the test stops early.
Verify X-OTPRoute-Signature (HMAC-SHA256 of <t>.<raw body> with the endpoint secret), reject stale timestamps and process each activation id once. The webhook capture guide and the API docs have the full picture.
How do non-developers order a +250 number for testing?
In the dashboard, open the OTP Gateway, pick Rwanda and the service, check the price, confirm, then paste the number into the app under test. The code appears on the order card. After 20 minutes with no SMS the order closes and the money returns to the wallet.
What if the code never comes?
Silence on a +250 order usually has an ordinary explanation:
- The platform declined the number. Some services reject virtual numbers, which is exactly why unused orders are refunded. Try another service route, or a neighbouring market such as Uganda, if your test case allows it.
- The form mangled the number. Confirm your app sent
+250and nine digits, with no leftover0. - The route was briefly busy. Let the window run instead of cancelling after a minute, then retry later.
Avoid re-ordering in a tight loop; add a pause between attempts so your own scripts do not look like abuse to the target platform.
What about long-term lines and billing?
Rwanda has no self-serve long-term number on OTP Route. Teams with an operations need can email [email protected], but availability depends on local rules and is not assured. Dedicated Virtual Numbers, from $1.95/month, cover the US and Canada only.
Payment is pay as you go from a single USD wallet, topped up by card or USDT/USDC, with a PDF invoice by email for every top-up and no monthly fee. Sandbox access with simulated numbers is available on request for integration work. Follow every service's terms and OTP Route's Acceptable Use Policy.
Frequently asked questions
Can I test my app's Rwanda sign-up flow without a local SIM card?
Yes. Order a +250 number for your service from the OTP Gateway and read the code in the dashboard or through the API.
What is Rwanda's country id in the API?
It is rw, used in GET /api/v1/prices and in the POST /api/v1/activations body.
Should a stored Rwandan mobile number keep its leading 0?
No. Remove the trunk 0 and prefix +250, so 078X XXX XXX becomes +25078XXXXXXX.
How long does a Rwandan activation stay open?
Twenty minutes. If no SMS arrives in that time, or you cancel, the full charge is returned to your wallet.
Can I use webhooks instead of polling for +250 codes?
Yes. Register up to 5 endpoints and listen for activation.sms_received, activation.expired and activation.cancelled, verifying the signature header on each delivery.
Is there a way to keep a Rwandan number long term?
There is no self-serve option. Long-term Dedicated Numbers are sold only for the United States and Canada; for Rwanda you can ask [email protected], though nothing is promised.
How do I pay for Rwandan verification codes?
Top up the prepaid USD wallet by card or with USDT/USDC and pay per delivered code. See pricing for the current starting rate.
Can I try the integration before spending money?
Yes. Ask for sandbox mode on a development account to get simulated numbers and codes, then sign up for live use.
