Dutch SMS Verification for EU Launches and QA Pipelines
OTP Route lets a team receive Netherlands (+31) SMS verification codes on temporary numbers, visible in the dashboard or delivered through the REST API and signed webhooks. The OTP Gateway starts from $0.20 per code, and if no message lands within 20 minutes the full charge goes back to your wallet. Use the country id nl in API calls.
Your EU launch runs through Amsterdam: how do you verify the +31 path?
A lot of products enter the European Union through the Netherlands. The market is digitally mature, English is widely understood, and many international companies place their EU operations there. That makes the +31 sign-up, login and recovery flow one of the first things a growth or QA team has to prove works, usually long before anyone on the team holds a Dutch mobile contract.
The common workarounds are weak: a single shared SIM in a drawer, codes relayed by a colleague, or skipping the case altogether. OTP Route replaces them with a real Dutch verification number, issued per test, with the code returned to your test harness. The QA testing overview shows how teams wire this into regression suites.
How do +31 mobile numbers need to be stored?
The Netherlands uses country code +31 and the trunk prefix 0. Dutch users typically write a mobile number as 06 followed by eight digits. In E.164 the zero disappears, giving +31 6 and then the eight digits, nine digits after the country code in total.
That difference trips up validation more often than you would expect. Accept both the domestic 06 format and the international form in the UI, strip the leading zero during normalisation, and persist only the E.164 value. Then run the verification flow against a real +31 number to confirm your SMS provider receives exactly what you stored. Expect Dutch-language messages from services that localise by number or locale, and English from others, so match on the digits, not the prose.
Which apps can I verify on a Netherlands route?
The Dutch route lists more than 3,000 services. Today's popular picks include Telegram, WhatsApp, Microsoft & Outlook, LinkedIn, Google (Gmail & YouTube), Instagram, Snapchat, Discord, Amazon, Uber, Airbnb, eBay, Claude and ChatGPT (OpenAI).
Routes are refreshed through the day, so check the current state with GET /api/v1/services or the dashboard before scheduling a large run.
What does the Netherlands OTP API call sequence look like?
Authenticate with a Bearer key that starts with or_live_, created in the Developer console. Each account can hold up to 10 keys and 5 webhook endpoints, with a limit of 300 requests per minute.
First confirm cost with GET /api/v1/prices?country=nl&service=telegram. Then create the order with POST /api/v1/activations, passing nl and the service id in the JSON body; the response returns the activation id and the Dutch number. Feed the number into your sign-up step and either poll GET /api/v1/activations/{id} or wait for an activation.sms_received event. Expired or cancelled orders fire activation.expired and activation.cancelled.
Verify every webhook against the X-OTPRoute-Signature header with your endpoint secret and drop old timestamps; this HMAC walkthrough covers the details. The developer hub has client examples.
How do non-developers get a Dutch code from the dashboard?
Operations and support staff can skip the API entirely. After creating an account with an email code or Google sign-in, open the OTP Gateway, pick the service, choose Netherlands, review the price and order. The +31 number appears straight away, and the incoming code shows on the same screen.
The activation stays open for 20 minutes. You pay only if a code arrives; otherwise, or if you cancel early, the wallet is refunded automatically. If nothing comes through, let the window finish, confirm the service accepts virtual numbers, and retry later or on another route such as Belgium rather than re-ordering in quick succession.
Is a dedicated Dutch number possible?
There is no self-serve long-term +31 number on OTP Route. Dedicated Virtual Numbers are sold only for the United States and Canada, from $1.95/month, and include inbound and outbound SMS, webhook forwarding and browser calling. Teams that need a permanent Dutch line can email [email protected] to ask, but that depends on local rules and may not be possible. For a staging account that must log in repeatedly, a US or Canadian dedicated line is usually the cleaner choice.
How do the wallet and sandbox work?
Billing is a prepaid USD wallet with pay-as-you-go pricing, no subscription and no plan tiers. Fund it by card or with USDT/USDC, and expect a PDF invoice by email for every top-up. A development account can be switched to sandbox on request so integration tests return simulated numbers and codes without spending funds. OTP Route is meant for testing and running your own legitimate products; respect each service's terms and the Acceptable Use Policy.
Frequently asked questions
Should I store Dutch numbers with the 06 prefix?
Store the E.164 form instead: drop the leading 0 and save +31 followed by the nine remaining digits. Display the local format only in the UI.
Can I test my app's Netherlands sign-up from outside the EU?
Yes. Order an activation for nl from anywhere and read the +31 code in the dashboard or through the API.
How much is a Netherlands verification number?
Pricing starts from $0.20 per code and varies by service; GET /api/v1/prices returns the live figure before you order.
Will the OTP message arrive in Dutch?
Sometimes. Services that localise by phone number or account language may send Dutch text, while others use English, so parse the code digits.
What happens if no SMS reaches the +31 number?
After 20 minutes without a code, the activation closes and the full amount returns to your wallet automatically.
Can my webhook receive the same event twice?
Retries can happen, so make the handler idempotent by keying on the activation id and verifying the signature on every request.
Is there a Dutch number I can keep for months?
Not self-serve. Long-term dedicated lines are a US and Canada product; for other needs, email support to ask.
