Testing and operating with Macao +853 verification numbers
OTP Route lets you receive Macao (+853) SMS verification codes on one-time numbers from its OTP Gateway, shown in the dashboard and delivered to your code by REST polling or signed webhooks. Pricing begins at $0.20 per code with each service's exact rate returned live by the API, and an order that sees no SMS within 20 minutes is refunded automatically.
How are Macao numbers different from Hong Kong and mainland China numbers?
Macao has its own country calling code, +853, separate from +852 for Hong Kong and +86 for mainland China. That sounds obvious, yet phone pickers that group the three under one flag, or that guess the code from a browser locale, are a common source of failed sign-ups in the region.
Local numbers are eight digits with no trunk prefix, and mobile numbers start with 6. In E.164 a Macao mobile is +853 followed by those eight digits. When you normalize input, strip spaces and hyphens, accept an optional leading 853, and refuse numbers whose length belongs to a neighbor: an eleven-digit mainland mobile pasted into a +853 field should fail validation, not silently send an SMS to nowhere.
If you also serve the wider region, the Hong Kong and Taiwan routes sit next to this one in the catalog.
What languages do +853 verification texts use?
Chinese and Portuguese are both official languages, Cantonese is the everyday spoken language, and English is common in business and hospitality. In practice, codes arriving on Macao numbers may be written in Traditional Chinese characters, English or occasionally Portuguese, depending on the sender and the app's locale.
For QA that means two things. First, your extraction logic should find the digits inside Chinese-language text, not only inside ASCII sentences. Second, if your own product sends codes to Macao users, preview the message in each language you support, since messages containing Chinese characters use a Unicode encoding and fit fewer characters into one SMS segment.
Why do teams need a Macao verification number?
Macao's economy leans heavily on tourism, hospitality and services that welcome visitors from across Asia, so many apps used there are regional or international rather than purely local. Typical reasons a business tests with +853 numbers:
- A travel, booking or loyalty product confirming that sign-up works for Macao residents, not just visitors.
- A messaging or marketplace app checking its Traditional Chinese localization end to end.
- An operations team that manages business profiles for a Macao venue and does not want staff using personal SIMs.
- A QA group adding the territory to a regional matrix next to Hong Kong and Taiwan.
The operations teams page covers the account-management case in more detail.
Which services can reach a Macao number through the OTP Gateway?
More than 1,600 services are currently available on the Macao route. Ones that matter in this part of Asia include WeChat, WhatsApp, LINE, KakaoTalk, Telegram, Google (Gmail & YouTube), Facebook, Instagram, Microsoft & Outlook, Amazon, AliExpress, Airbnb, Netflix and Discord.
The mix changes during the day, so automated runs should ask the API what is live for mo rather than relying on a saved list.
How do I receive Macao codes through the API?
Everything sits under https://otproute.com/api/v1 and authenticates with a Bearer key whose prefix is or_live_. Use mo as the country id.
- Look up service ids once via
GET /api/v1/services. - Confirm cost with
GET /api/v1/prices?country=mo&service=wechat. - Order through
POST /api/v1/activationswith{"service": "wechat", "country": "mo"}and keep the returned activation id. - Trigger the SMS from the app using the +853 number you received.
- Collect the result by polling
GET /api/v1/activations/{id}or from theactivation.sms_receivedwebhook.
Webhooks carry X-OTPRoute-Signature: t=<unix>,v1=<hex>. Verify the HMAC-SHA256 of <t>.<raw body> with the endpoint secret, refuse timestamps that are too old, and make the handler idempotent on the activation id. You can hold 10 keys and 5 endpoints, with a ceiling of 300 requests per minute. Prefer the dashboard? Pick Macao, pick the service, confirm the displayed price, copy the number and wait for the code to appear.
What should I do when a +853 code does not arrive?
Orders stay open for 20 minutes and you are charged only if a code arrives. If the window lapses or you cancel with POST /api/v1/activations/{id}/cancel, the full amount flows back to your wallet.
When nothing comes through, wait out the window, then consider whether the service turns away virtual numbers; some do, and that is the situation the refund covers. Try later or through a different service route, and add backoff so scripted retries do not stack up. The country routing article explains when switching to a neighboring route makes sense for your test.
Can I keep a Macao number, and how does payment work?
No self-serve long-term Macao line is offered. Dedicated Numbers, which keep receiving SMS and support outbound calls from the browser, are sold only for the United States and Canada, from $1.95/month. Teams that need a lasting +853 line can write to [email protected], but local regulation decides whether that is possible.
Billing runs through one prepaid USD wallet with no monthly fee. Card payments and USDT/USDC stablecoins both fund it, and an emailed PDF invoice follows every top-up for your records. A development account can be switched to sandbox on request so you can build against simulated numbers and codes first. Please use OTP Route only for your own legitimate products and accounts, follow every service's terms and the OTP Route Acceptable Use Policy.
Frequently asked questions
Can I test a Macao sign-up flow without being in Macao?
Yes. An OTP Gateway number with the +853 code receives the SMS, and you read it in the dashboard or through the API.
What is Macao's country id in the OTP Route API?
Use mo in requests such as GET /api/v1/prices?country=mo&service=whatsapp.
How many digits does a Macao mobile number have?
Eight digits after +853, typically starting with 6, and there is no trunk prefix to remove.
How much does a +853 number for testing cost?
From $0.20 per code, depending on the service. The API and dashboard show the live price before you order, and failed orders are refunded.
Will the code arrive in Chinese?
It can. Codes on Macao numbers come in Traditional Chinese, English or sometimes Portuguese, so parse digits rather than words.
Is a long-term Macao number available?
Not as a self-serve product; Dedicated Numbers are US and Canada only. Email the support team to ask about +853.
Can I build the integration without paying for real numbers?
Yes, request sandbox mode for your development account to get simulated numbers and codes.
