A working checklist for Ghanaian (+233) OTP testing and operations
OTP Route receives Ghana (+233) SMS verification codes on one-time numbers from its OTP Gateway, so a team can read each code in the dashboard or have it pushed to its own systems by signed webhook or API polling. Codes start from $0.20 per code, and if nothing arrives inside the 20-minute activation window the charge returns to your wallet.
Before you start: a Ghana readiness list
Tick these off and a +233 test rarely surprises you:
- Credentials. A Bearer key from the Developer console (prefix
or_live_). Separate keys for local, staging and CI make revocation painless. - Country and service ids. Ghana is
gh; service ids come fromGET /api/v1/services. - A number parser that understands the trunk zero. Ghanaians write mobile numbers with a leading 0 at home, and your forms will receive both styles.
- Delivery plumbing. Either a polling loop or a webhook endpoint with its secret stored safely.
- A short list of services to cover. Decide which sign-up and login flows need a Ghanaian number before ordering anything.
- Budget visibility. Read
GET /api/v1/balancebefore a batch so you do not stop mid-suite.
How are Ghanaian mobile numbers written, and how should you store them?
Ghana's country code is +233 and its trunk prefix is 0. A mobile number written domestically has ten digits starting with 0; in international form the 0 disappears and nine digits follow +233. The classic data-quality bug is a user who selects +233 and then types the local number including its zero, producing an extra digit. Strip a single leading 0 when a country code is present, then save the result in E.164 so deduplication, search and SMS sending all agree on one representation.
English is the official language, and most verification texts reach Ghanaian numbers in English, although Akan (Twi), Ewe, Ga and Dagbani are widely spoken and some apps localise their wording. Keep your code extractor focused on the digit sequence rather than the surrounding words.
Why test here? Teams launching in West Africa, products built around mobile money and payments, and companies serving the Ghanaian diaspora in the UK and North America all need proof that +233 sign-ups work. Fintech teams can read our fintech onboarding notes for the KYC side of that story.
Ordering a +233 number through the SMS verification API
The base URL is https://otproute.com/api/v1.
- Fetch the live price for your pair with
GET /api/v1/prices?country=gh&service=<id>; it also tells you whether the route is available right now. - Send
POST /api/v1/activationswith{"service": "<id>", "country": "gh"}and keep the returned activation id next to the test case. - Submit the +233 number to the product under test.
- Receive the code through an
activation.sms_receivedwebhook, or pollGET /api/v1/activations/{id}at a sensible interval. - On failure or teardown, call
POST /api/v1/activations/{id}/cancel.
Webhook requests carry X-OTPRoute-Signature: t=<unix>,v1=<hex>. Recompute the HMAC-SHA256 of the timestamp, a dot and the raw body with the endpoint secret, compare in constant time and reject stale timestamps. Make the handler idempotent by keying on the activation id so a retried delivery cannot fill the same test twice. The developer hub links SDK examples and the reference.
Which services are routed through Ghana today?
More than 1,600 services are available on the Ghana route. The current snapshot of popular ones includes WhatsApp, Telegram, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, Google (Gmail & YouTube), LinkedIn, Uber, Amazon, ChatGPT (OpenAI), Claude, Discord and Signal. Social and messaging apps dominate what Ghanaian users sign up for, so they are a natural first pass for localisation QA.
Availability is live, not fixed. Query the prices endpoint for the exact pair instead of trusting a list that was correct this morning.
Running it from the dashboard instead
Not everyone on the team needs code. Sign in, open the OTP Gateway, choose Ghana and the service, review the price that appears before ordering, and confirm. Copy the +233 number into the app being tested; when the SMS lands, the code is displayed beside the order along with the remaining time. Operations staff often use this path to check a single flow after a release without touching the test harness.
Troubleshooting a silent +233 number
When nothing appears, go down this list in order:
- Is the window still open? Activations last 20 minutes. Give the service time before concluding it failed.
- Did the service accept the number? Some platforms decline virtual numbers. An error on the form itself means cancel and try another route.
- Try again later, or another route. Coverage for a given service shifts during the day.
- Don't hammer it. A loop that re-orders every few seconds wastes requests against the 300-per-minute limit and rarely helps.
- Look at your own logs. A rejected signature or a handler that crashed will look like a missing code.
You are only charged if the code arrives. Expired and cancelled activations are refunded to the wallet in full and automatically. Our article on reducing failed OTP deliveries goes deeper on retry design.
Long-term lines, payments and the sandbox
There is no self-serve long-term Ghanaian number. Dedicated lines are a US and Canada product from $1.95/month, described on the virtual numbers page; for a Ghana line, email [email protected], and the team will tell you what local rules allow.
OTP Route uses one prepaid USD wallet, pay as you go, with no subscription. Fund it by card or with USDT/USDC and you receive a PDF invoice by email each time. For integration work, a development account can be switched to sandbox on request to return simulated numbers and codes. You can create an account with an email code or Google sign-in. Use every number in line with the target service's terms and our Acceptable Use Policy.
Frequently asked questions
Can I receive Ghana SMS OTP codes through an API?
Yes. Create an activation with country gh and collect the code by webhook or by polling the activation endpoint.
Should I store Ghanaian numbers with the leading zero?
No. Drop the trunk 0 and store E.164 with +233 and nine digits, which keeps search and deduplication consistent.
What language do verification texts use on Ghanaian numbers?
Usually English, the official language. Some apps localise wording, so extract the digits rather than matching fixed text.
What does a +233 number for testing cost?
OTP Gateway codes start from $0.20 per code; the precise figure for a service is shown before you order.
Am I charged if the app never sends the code?
No. If no SMS arrives in the 20-minute window, or you cancel, the full amount is returned to the wallet.
Can my support team get a permanent Ghana number?
Not self-serve. Long-term lines exist only in the US and Canada; ask the team by email about other countries.
Can I pay with stablecoins?
Yes. The wallet accepts card top-ups as well as USDT and USDC, and each top-up comes with a PDF invoice.
