Coinbase SMS codes: a one-time number or a line you keep?
A team can receive a Coinbase verification code on an OTP Route number by ordering an OTP Gateway activation with the service id coinbase and reading the SMS in the dashboard or through the API. One-time numbers start at $0.20 per code and are charged only if a code arrives, but because Coinbase ties a phone number to account security, an account you intend to keep is usually better served by a number you keep as well.
Why does the number choice matter so much for Coinbase?
Coinbase uses a phone number at several points: confirming it during sign-up, sending two-step codes at sign-in, re-checking it before sensitive actions, and helping with account recovery. The platform also encourages stronger factors such as authenticator apps and security keys.
That has a direct consequence. A one-time OTP Gateway number receives a single code and is then gone. If the Coinbase account will ask for that phone again next week, you won't have it.
- OTP Gateway fits a short-lived check: confirming that a phone verification step accepts a number from a given country, or a single confirmation on an account your business controls.
- Dedicated Numbers fit an account that must keep logging in — for example a company account shared by a finance operations team. These lines renew monthly from $1.95/month, receive SMS in the dashboard and by webhook, and are sold in the US and Canada only. Details are on virtual numbers.
Where can a Coinbase code be received?
Coinbase activations are currently listed in 201 countries, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Australia, Japan, Singapore, the Philippines, Nigeria and South Africa.
A country appearing in that list says nothing about where Coinbase itself operates; Coinbase decides which markets it serves and which features are available in each. Match the number's country to the market where the account is legitimately registered and to the case you are testing — a UK onboarding flow should be checked with a UK number, not whichever route happens to be cheaper.
Ordering a Coinbase activation through the API
The Coinbase verification code API flow uses the service id coinbase against https://otproute.com/api/v1, authenticated with an or_live_ Bearer key from the Developer console.
- Look up the price:
GET /api/v1/prices?country=<id>&service=coinbase. It returns the live price and whether the route is orderable. - Create the activation:
POST /api/v1/activationswith{"service": "coinbase", "country": "gb"}(or the id of your target country). Keep the returned activation id. - Enter the number on the Coinbase phone step.
- Collect the code by webhook or polling.
- Cancel with
POST /api/v1/activations/{id}/cancelif the flow stops before a code is needed.
Country ids come from GET /api/v1/countries. Each account gets up to 10 keys and 300 requests per minute; reference material is in the docs.
Handling the Coinbase OTP with webhooks or polling
Register an endpoint (up to 5 per account) for activation.sms_received, activation.expired and activation.cancelled. Before trusting a request, read X-OTPRoute-Signature: t=<unix>,v1=<hex>, compute HMAC-SHA256 of <t>.<raw body> with that endpoint's secret, compare in constant time and reject old timestamps.
Make the handler idempotent: store the activation id and ignore any event you have already processed, since a delivery may be retried. If you can't expose a public endpoint, poll GET /api/v1/activations/{id} every few seconds until the code appears or the activation expires. The pattern is described in webhook-based OTP capture.
Receiving a Coinbase code from the dashboard
- Open the OTP Gateway and search for Coinbase.
- Choose the country that matches the account.
- Review the displayed price and place the order.
- Paste the number into Coinbase's phone field.
- Copy the code from the activation card when it arrives.
The activation stays open for 20 minutes. No code in that time, or a cancellation, returns the full amount to the wallet.
Why might a Coinbase SMS not arrive?
Financial platforms are careful about which numbers they accept, and Coinbase may refuse virtual numbers or decline to send to a particular route. That is the main reason the refund rule exists: you pay only when a code is delivered.
- Let the window run before giving up; delivery depends on the service and the route.
- Try another time, or a different country only if it genuinely matches the account.
- Don't place repeated orders in a tight loop — it wastes time and can look suspicious to the receiving service.
- If the account must log in again later, move it to a Dedicated Number instead of retrying one-time numbers.
Using Coinbase phone verification responsibly
A Coinbase phone number is one part of the account's security, not a substitute for identity verification. Coinbase requires real identity checks, and OTP Route must never be used to evade them, to open accounts for other people, to create several accounts for one person, or to claim promotions you are not entitled to.
Keep to one account per real person or business, follow Coinbase's terms, and note that OTP Route's Acceptable Use Policy applies to every order. Coinbase is a trademark of its owner; OTP Route has no affiliation with it.
Frequently asked questions
Can I receive a Coinbase OTP through an API?
Yes. Create an activation with the service id coinbase and read the code from the activation.sms_received webhook or by polling the activation.
Is a one-time number a good Coinbase phone number for a long-term account?
Usually not, because Coinbase may ask for the number again at sign-in or recovery. A Dedicated Number in the US or Canada suits an account you keep.
Does Coinbase accept every virtual number for Coinbase verification?
No. It may reject virtual numbers or specific routes, and an undelivered code is refunded automatically.
How many countries can I order Coinbase numbers in?
The current list covers 201 countries, though Coinbase itself serves only the markets it chooses.
Can I use Coinbase SMS verification for testing my own product?
Only for accounts and products you legitimately own or operate, within Coinbase's terms and OTP Route's Acceptable Use Policy.
Does a phone code replace Coinbase identity verification?
No. Phone verification is separate from Coinbase's identity checks, which still apply.
What does a Coinbase code cost?
From $0.20 per code; the exact price depends on the country and is returned by GET /api/v1/prices.
